St Gildas wrote his Chronicle over a course of several years,
and apparently wrote his chronicle without the Church's direction. His manner
of writing was both acid criticism of his fellow Britons and contempt of those
who should know better. Written during the time of the Anglo Saxon invasions,
Gildas manages to convey fear and loathing of the pagan invaders with his own
despair at the local Britons who were not that concerned in fighting the
pagan settlers, but mixed with them freely.
